East Side Fire Department does not engage in phone solicitation or any other kind of
solicitations. ESFD would like to urge residents and businesses to beware of
unsubstantiated solicitation efforts, and to take precautions to ensure your generous
donation is going for the purpose you have intended. ESFD has recently received
calls from residents who have reported questionable solicitations. The following
information and guidelines are provided to assist you in determining if the organization
soliciting your support is legitimate.
Request the full name of the organization/association.
Ask questions about their purpose for fund raising and determine whom specifically
will benefit from this donation. The solicitor must also provide, if you request, the
percentage of donation that goes to the charitable cause.
If the telephone solicitor used abusive or rude language or makes numerous
telephone calls after being rejected, phone your local police department at 9-1-1 and
file a police report
Request proper identification and check it if they come to the door to collect.
Remember to always be cautious of strangers at your door.
Don't be afraid to contact your local fire department to verify the program
described. You may contact East Side Fire Department at (225) 272-7779.
Request copies of brochures/flyers describing the fundraiser or event being
sponsored (if magazine space is being sold -- ask for a copy).
If an event is being sponsored at an amusement park, convention center, or local
establishment and you are in doubt, contact the Community Relations and
Education of the event site for verification.
Legitimate groups can easily meet these requirements. If you have
doubts, use your best judgment and donate to organizations that you know
and trust.
